It has come to my attention that there are many pages talking about a potential release of an upcoming jailbreak in iOS 5.0.1. The best way to determine whether to upgrade or not upgrade at this point are the following:
By upgrading, you will have the ability to eventually jailbreak 5.0.1 untethered since your device is running that latest version. If iOS 5.1 is released, you might not be able to upgrade to 5.0.1 assuming you're in a version under 5.0 (4.3.3 for instance).
If you are willing to do so, I'd recommend upgrading and jailbreaking into version 5.0.1. Considering this being the best thing to save your SHSH through Cydia.
However, I recommend not to do so if you rely on a carrier unlock. I have seen people buying iPhones without even knowing if an upcoming unlock is to be released. Well I wouldn't jeopardize money unless I know I can unlock the device.
I encourage you not to buy a device with the hope of an upcoming unlock method. If there's no unlock, don't even think there will be an unlock method anytime soon. There may be, but the chances are from 2 over 10.
You must be aware that hackers and developers are now working on unlocking the newest iPhone 4s. Meaning iPhone 4 might be left behind, and also 3Gs.
If you do not rely on an unlock, and would like to take advantage of all new features in iOS 5 (iMessage, Notification Center, etc). Go ahead and upgrade and wait because the wait won't be long.
