How To Backup Your Facebook's Account Information

Facebook has implemented features on which I feel very satisfied with. Facebook more than a social network, is a social environment, perhaps the most powerful communication media ever. Now you can back up all your data, from post #1, contacts, photos, etc. This is very helpful if you would like to take a reminder of your Facebook life.

About three or four months ago, I've watched Facebook's live interview with Mark Zuckerberg where he explained the benefits of using the new Facebook's messaging system and how this replaced the need of sending e-mails to communicate with friends, etc. He mentioned that all chat logs have been stored in servers, which we would be able to access at certain point. Well it seems that is available, can't tell how long it's been.

To backup, you first need to go to the Account Settings, and click on Download Your Information under the Settings tab.

According to Facebook's Help Page, your backup includes:

  • Your profile information (e.g., your contact information, interests, groups)
  • Wall posts and content that you and your friends have posted to your profile
  • Photos and videos that you have uploaded to your account
  • Your friend list
  • Notes you have created
  • Events to which you have RSVP’d
  • Your sent and received messages
  • Any comments that you and your friends have made on your Wall posts, photos, and other profile content.
It appears to take a while, it's been about 30 minutes and I haven't received a confirmation e-mail for when my data is ready to download.

Once it's finally ready, you'll get an e-mail that will let you know you should be good to go. This took almost two hours, and it's a 153 MB archive since 2007.

Once downloaded, you'll extract the .zip file, which will order the account info on folders.

However, you have an index.html file, on which you are able to see your account profile in an HTML view form.

If you once wondered about where all your postings were, well, truth is they all remain someplace in Facebook's servers, waiting for someone to read them all. Facebook can track your life basically, and probably, Twitter will do. It's probably too much to get the time to read all your posts and comments. I mean, is kind of worth it, but is not. Unless you have stuff you really want to remember, or take from there, it's a very good feature Facebook have developed.

This is my first Facebook posting

At this moment however, there is no way to select specific account information to download. A backup will include everything within the profile. Hopefully we will see an easiest way to prevent bugging over social networks, and this could be a secure method to backup and transfer your information to another profile.
I just wonder where Facebook will stop in the future. I have honestly been thinking about each Facebook update (useful), and how they have come with the idea of. I'll be posting my personal perspective on how to successfully manage a Facebook account security, and prevent bullying or stalking.
